Resident Return Visa (RRV) (Subclass (SC) 155 or 157 Visa)
Australian permanent residents can remain in Australia indefinitely from their date of arrival. However, if any permanent resident wishes to travel overseas and back after the first 5 years, obtaining a resident return visa is necessary. Therefore, it's crucial to apply for and obtain your resident return visa if you intend to travel overseas after the specified date (i.e the "Must not Arrive After" date) in your permanent residency visa grant letter.
In a situation where, if you have travelled outside of Australia and your permanent residency visa’s entry date has expired, you will not be able to enter Australia as a permanent resident unless you hold a valid resident return visa. During the COVID-19 pandemic, there were instances where some permanent residents were unable to return to Australia within the timeframe specified on their visa grant letter.
You can apply for RRV (SC 155 or 157) online while in or outside Australia. The online application process is the same for SC155 and SC 157 visa. However, according to immigration regulations, you must satisfy certain criteria, which vary depending on your situation.
Step 1-Demonstrate that you are either:
An Australian permanent resident or
An Australian citizen but has subsequently lost or cancelled the Australian citizenship or
A former Australian permanent resident whose permanent residency was not cancelled.
Step 2- For SC 155 visa you must meet one of the following residency requirements at the time of applying for the RRV visa.
The applicant was lawfully present in Australia for a total period of not less than 2 years in the last 5 years.
The applicant is outside Australia and has substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties with Australia which are of benefit to Australia and:
a) has not been outside Australia for a continuous period of 5 years or more, unless there are compelling reasons for the absence.
b) has been absent from Australia for less than 10 years before the application, and not absent from Australia total into more than 5 years in the period from the date of the application, unless there are compelling reasons for the absence.
The applicant is in Australia and:
a) has substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties with Australia that benefit to Australia; and
b) has not been absent from Australia for a continuous period of 5 years unless there are compelling reasons for the absence.
If you have resided in Australia for less than 2 years in the last 5 years immediately preceding the visa application and cannot demonstrate substantial business, cultural, employment or personal ties with Australia which are of benefit to Australia, you may still be able to request for RRV SC 157 visa if you can demonstrate the following:
a) Compelling and compassionate reasons for departing Australia or

In such cases, the Department of Home Affairs may consider granting RRV SC/157 visa for only 3 months for entry into Australia.
